The Blue Ridge Passage (BRP) is a 5 day co-ed backpacking trip for teens, ages 14-18*, that takes place in the beautiful backcountry of Shenandoah National Park. There is a focus on the immersion in nature, physical challenge, personal growth and authentic connection. Through strenuous hiking, solo time in the wilderness, ritual, and group work, participants have the potential for a truly transformational experience.
The parents and guardians of the youth are all invited to be present for a ceremonial send-off and return. This supports family connections and provides a bridge to help the participants integrate their experience in home life.
Registrants will receive a detailed packing list; having appropriate gear is critical. If you do not have access to the necessary gear, Springhouse staff can help you secure what is needed. Both guides are Springhouse staff members who have extensive experience including wilderness first aid, leading groups, and navigating the backcountry.
We know that spending time in the wild is an essential component of becoming fully human. This trip builds resiliency in teens through a week of primitive camping, hiking up to 40 miles, carrying a heavy pack, and exposure to the elements in the context of natural beauty and intimate community. This kind of experience empowers our young people to know their strength and test their edges with the support of peers and guides. Our hope is that this trip supports adolescents to grow into authentic adults, inspired and empowered to meet the world’s emerging needs.
*Teens outside the age range may be considered for the trip – please reach out to Chris Wolf with any questions.
