This course is for writers or those who are called to write (17+) and who want to learn more about how to tell their own stories. We all have many stories inside of us: things that happened to us or our family; narratives about our identities; or even just everyday occurrences that, for some reason, feel intriguing. In this class, you will explore true stories of your choosing through writing prompts and workshop that will – to quote my first writing teacher – “help you discover the tensions and complications that lurk beneath the surface so that you can make the written experience as new and compelling to the reader as it is for you.”
The art of nonfiction memoir uses the same tools as fiction including character, scene, setting, and detail. We will learn how to strengthen all of these elements, while experimenting with different ways to generate stories. The goal will be self-expression and discovery, as well as taking your writing a step further.
