Floyd County, Virginia – Springhouse announces being awarded a grant from the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation this year to support their long-term work in addressing racial injustice and prejudice and in strengthening the community through collaborative efforts. This grant has supported the delivery of Springhouse’s curriculum that focuses on dismantling social injustice. The AEP funds have also supported collaborative efforts with the local community, particularly with the Floyd Asylum Seekers and a trip Springhouse took to Montgomery, Alabama where they continued their learning journey with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI).
Springhouse continues in social justice work through their intergenerational school that is expanding to serve 5 to 12 year-olds this fall with a specific focus of a two-way language and cultural immersion program. Enrollment for their K-12 school is currently open and will continue throughout the learning year. Springhouse will also bring their skills in community building through a new initiative, the Community Roundtable, that will provide leadership development and networking opportunities for cross-sector leaders in the New River Valley, leading to a more inspired and cohesive approach to address community needs.
“The AEP Foundation strives to strengthen our communities and positively influence culture change through our commitment to racial justice and education,” said Amanda Cox, Regional External Affairs Manager. “The innovative and unique programs offered by Springhouse address many critical issues in the New River Valley area. We are honored to provide support for their programs that will further develop their diversity and inclusion and equal justice curriculum.”
Executive Director Dr. Jenny Finn expressed her excitement about the support from AEP, sharing, “Because we have an economic model that does not turn away any learner, of any age, due to a lack of funds, we need the support of aligned foundations like AEP. We are very grateful to be of service in our community by providing educational opportunities that address the injustices we face in our world today.”
