As wind,

As water,

As fire,

As life,

God

Is both creative and destructive,

Demanding and yielding,

Sculptor and clay.

God

Is Infinite Potential.

God

Is Change.

~ Octavia Butler, Parable of the Talents

We open this month’s post with a big announcement: Springhouse Downtown, as we know it, will be closing this coming May. We are shifting toward a more focused purpose and vision of how art and media can serve building a culture that takes care of life. More on that later.

Springhouse Downtown has been an inspiring space, rich with an audacious and creative community. Born of a longing to provide a space where creativity brings people of all ages together for inspiration and collaboration, this vibrant community has been a hub for creativity both for its own sake and with even grander, magical purposes.

We’ve learned so much during this time together:

  • Creativity for its own sake is beautiful and valuable; Collective creativity with a shared purpose is even more alluring, even more inspiring, and even more powerful.
  • We continue to be dedicated to building a culture that takes care of life.
  • Creativity is a powerful tool for culture change.

As we continue to hint, we have a big dream in the making that we’re excited to share with you soon. In the meantime, we still have many ways to keep playing and creating together:

  1. Open Studio: Still 4-7pm every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through May 5th. Final Open Studio and Art Sale on May 5th, 4-7pm.
  • Amplified: Teen Voices on Addiction show opens at Floyd Center for the Arts on April 8th, 5-7pm.
  • Puppets: We’re making larger-than-life-sized puppets in preparation for our Procession of Appalachian Species this Spring! Join us Fridays or any Open Studio day, and/or create your own with another organization.
  • Bookmaking: We have two more sessions during open studio Mondays 4/3 and 4/17 – we explore our stories, learn about mentorship, try out binding techniques, make handmade books and journals – come play with us! 🙂 We also would love for you to join us as we present a showcase at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library at 11am on Saturday, April 26th.
  • I would like to tell you that I’m lonely. An art show by Skyler Locke (Artist in Residence). Opens May 19th and 26th at 7pm. This art show is an exploration of loneliness, an opportunity to sit with Skyler as he navigates his loneliness and for you to explore yours. • Springhouse Annual Gathering: May 27th, 10am to 2pm
  • Grand Opening & Immersive Art Experience: May 27th. Location and details TBA.

Please keep your eyes peeled and your hearts open during this transition time! We continue to have many ways to stay connected, both at Springhouse Downtown and with Springhouse, on daily, weekly, and monthly basis (see springhouse.org/events) – and we have a shift into an exciting new venture, to be announced next month!

We are so grateful for all of you and the collective creativity we have had the blessing to share with you all at Springhouse Downtown.

With Trust and Gratitude,

The Springhouse Downtown Team
