One of our goals this year is to revive the farm at Springhouse. The farm is a practice ground for us to learn about human-nature reciprocity, work with our physical bodies, and provide food for our community. Under the guidance of Jason Dilg, Cultural Design fellows in the Regenerative Agricultural track are leading the charge on this initiative. They’ve been learning about permaculture, design, and farming.

This week we focused on the 12 permaculture principles as articulated by David Holmgren:

  1. Observe and Interact
  2. Catch and Store Energy
  3. Obtain a Yield
  4. Apply Self-Regulation and Feedback
  5. Use and Value Renewables
  6. Produce No Waste
  7. Design from Patterns to Details
  8. Integrate Don’t Segregate
  9. Use Small, Slow Solutions
  10. Use and Value Diversity
  11. Use Edges and Value the Marginal
  12. Creatively Use and Respond to Change

It’s powerful to learn these principles and then immediately put them into practice. Here are the fellows planting cilantro and radishes into the newly cultivated beds in our greenhouse!
